CHAPIN, ALARIC B. Rank and organization:
Private, Company G, 142d New York Infantry. Place and date: At Fort Fisher, N.C., 15 January 1865. Entered service at: Pamelia,
N.Y. Birth: Ogdensburg, N.Y. Date of issue: 28 December 1914. Citation: Voluntarily advanced with the head of the column and
cut down the palisading. After the war Chapin farmed,
worked as a teamster, and raised a family. He was issued his award on December 28, 1914. Chapin died in Portland, Oregon.
He is buried in Rose City Cemetery. COMPSON,
HARTWELL B. Rank
and organization: Major, 8th New York Cavalry. Place and date: At Waynesboro, Va., 2 March 1865. Entered service at: Seneca
Falls, N.Y. Birth: Seneca Falls, N.Y. Date of issue: 26 March 1865. Citation: Capture of flag belonging to Gen. Early's headquarters. After
mustering out in June 1865, Compson worked as a U.S. Marshal and Postmaster and eventually moved to Oregon where he became
Brigadier General of the Oregon National Guard. He died on August 31, 1905 in Portland, Oregon where he is buried in the Grand
Army of the Republic Cemetery. |

EDGERTON,
NATHAN H. Rank
and organization: Lieutenant and Adjutant, 6th U.S. Colored Troops. Place and date: At Chapins Farm, Va., 29 September 1864.
Entered service at: Philadelphia, Pa. Birth: ------. Date of issue: 30 March 1898. Citation: Took up the flag after 3 color
bearers had been shot down and bore it forward, though himself wounded. A native
of Ohio, Edgerton was promoted to captain before the end of the war. He later moved to Oregon where he died at the age of
93. He is buried on his farm in Agness, Oregon. RENNINGER,
LOUIS Rank
and organization: Corporal, Company H, 37th Ohio Infantry. Place and date: At Vicksburg, Miss., 22 May 1863. Entered service
at: ------. Birth: Liverpool, Ohio. Date of issue: 15 August 1894. Citation: Gallantry in the charge of the "volunteer storming
party." Relocating
to Oregon after the war, Renninger and his wife Elizabeth had a family farm in the Mohawk Valley of Lane County, Oregon. He
is buried in the Eugene Pioneer Cemetery.
