US Grant: Life of the former President
Life After the Presidency
After he retired from the Presidency, Grant became a partner in a financial
firm, which went bankrupt. About that time, he learned he had throat cancer. He began writing his memoirs to pay off
his debts and to provide for his family. As he raced against death, he produced an outstanding book that earned nearly $450,000.
Soon after he completed the last page, he died on July 23, 1885, at Mount MacGregor, New York. The "American Hero" was
63.
